THE EUROPEAN NETWORK FOR THE REENACTMENT OF ANTIQUITY

A European home for ancient reconstruction

ICARVS connects the organisations and practitioners who reconstruct the ancient world, 8th century BC to 7th century AD, into one permanent European community: easier to find, easier to work with, and visible for the quality of their work.

AUTHENTIC · VISIBLE · CONNECTED
About ICARVS

The community is not weak. It is fragmented.

ICARVS is a European non-governmental organisation for the reconstruction and reenactment of antiquity, bringing together groups, makers, workshops, researchers, museums, schools and festivals. Across Europe there is extraordinary strength, but too much of it remains disconnected.

Today
With ICARVS
IPartners are rediscovered for every project.
Partners are already known, and cooperation carries over.
IIExperience disappears into social media.
Work is kept in a permanent record.
IIIEvent participation leaves little trace.
Every event becomes part of your history.
IVOutstanding craftspeople are difficult to find.
Specialists are easy to find across Europe.
VSerious reconstruction is hard to tell from costume.
Authentic, evidence-led work is visible.

The resources already exist. What is missing is the structure connecting them.

Our mission

A permanent European network around the community that already exists, so the next initiative never starts from zero.

The shared layer

One community. Many identities. Shared capacity.

  1. I

    Independent

Organisations stay independent, but become easier to connect.

  2. II

    Lasting

    Knowledge survives individual projects.

  3. III

    Cumulative

    Experience accumulates instead of disappearing.

  4. IV

    Visible

    Serious, authentic work becomes visible.

  5. V

    Open

    Opportunities circulate across borders.

  6. VI

    Self-governed

The people practising the field help determine its direction.

What we do

A European network that turns reenactment into education.

  1. ICreate and maintain a European network for ancient reenactment, with bridges for cooperation and innovation.
  2. IIOpen new ways to reconstruct the past, offline and online, including 360°, VR, MR and XR.
  3. IIIPromote cultural, historical and practical education through crafts, digital tools and training.
  4. IVMake heritage sites, crafts and traditions visible to the wider community.
  5. VAdvance accessibility, inclusion, intercultural dialogue and common European values.
Objectives

We want cooperation to compound.

ICARVS is a shared layer: every project adds experience, every event adds history, every partnership adds relationships, and every new member adds capacity.

I

Connect the community

Link groups, makers, researchers, museums and schools across borders, so partners no longer have to be rediscovered for every project.

II

Make serious work visible

Give organisations and practitioners a permanent record of their reconstructions, events and expertise. Work becomes record, record becomes reputation.

III

Champion authenticity

Support evidence-led reconstruction based on sources, so serious work is easy to distinguish from costume.

IV

Open access to opportunities

Prepare shared applications for national and EU funding, and circulate invitations to events, projects and partnerships across the network.

V

Preserve and share knowledge

Build a common glossary, sources and educational resources that survive individual projects, and support training and mobility.

VI

A stronger European voice

Give the reconstruction community a self-governed European presence, with members shaping its direction through the General Assembly.

Roadmap

The ICARVS platform is in development.

This page is the organisation’s temporary home. The full ICARVS platform, where members will build their profiles and records, is being built by a small self-funded development team and will launch at icarvs.net. Founding members join now and help shape it.

Now The road ahead: our next 3, 6 and 12 months
  1. 3 MONTHS

    Foundation

    • Welcome the founding members
    • General Assembly online, December 2026
    • Elect the Secretariat
    • Adopt the platform rules
  2. 6 MONTHS

    Launch

    • First version of icarvs.net, January 2027
    • First organisation and member profiles
    • First joint Erasmus+ applications
  3. 12 MONTHS

    Growth

    • Members in at least nine countries
    • Working groups on standards
    • Ready for European NGO status
Why every country matters

Nine countries open the door to European funding.

With member organisations in nine European countries, active in education, training or youth, ICARVS can be recognised as a European NGO under Erasmus+ and apply for the larger, centrally managed programmes on behalf of the whole network.

It began in Serdica. It grows with you.

Membership

Become part of ICARVS

ICARVS is open to organisations and individuals working in the reconstruction of antiquity. The General Assembly approves applications, and membership begins that day.

What we ask from you

Your expertise

Bring the thing nobody else can provide: your knowledge, your period, your crafts, your events and your people.

What you get back

Six things no group can build alone.

I

Visibility

A profile for your group and every member: reconstructions, sources, events.

II

Funded projects

Shared applications for national and EU funding you could not write alone.

III

Events

Invitations and partners across the network, with every event on your record.

IV

Recognition

Peer attribution and contribution rewards that credit your people.

V

Knowledge

Glossary, sources and journals, verified and cited; disputed views side by side.

VI

A voice

Members vote in the General Assembly; associated partners are heard there.

Founding members help decide what comes next.
